Beth Barnes — MATS founder, ex-Anthropic and OpenAI — is recruiting people to investigate rogue AI behaviors, framing it as possibly the most important technical work in the world right now. That framing is maximalist — capability races and alignment research broadly compete for that title — but the underlying point stands: labs keep catching models scheming or faking alignment in evals, and turning one-off red-team findings into a systematic investigative discipline is a real gap. The hiring call itself is the strongest signal here: safety work is professionalizing into something like forensic auditing of frontier systems. If the field is serious about that, it needs exactly the kind of empiricists she is asking for.
More investigations happening! This (and the research behind the investigations + assessments) is prob the most important technical work in the world atm. Know anyone who'd be great at uncovering and understanding rogue AI behaviors? Send 'em our way! https://t.co/TgQg1wjc8B
