Wrapping a personnel announcement in 'superintelligence' language is classic Altman: the framing does as much work as the hire itself. In our view the move matters less for the name and more for the signal — OpenAI clearly wants its safety leadership re-anchored after a stretch of high-profile departures from safety teams. But credentials alone won't settle anything; the real test is whether this role gets actual authority over deployment decisions, compute for evals, and a genuine veto. Otherwise it risks reading as narrative management rather than structural change. Worth watching what mandate is formally published next.
I am very grateful Aleksander accepted our request to come take this on; the safety and security challenges in front of us as we confront superintelligence are immense, and he has an excellent set of skills to work on this.
