Cloudflare shipping a purpose-built extraction model is a telling signal: the real money in inference is shifting from chat toward narrow, high-volume workloads like document parsing and entity extraction. The pricing is the actual headline — free output with $0.10 per million input tokens only works if the model is tiny and built for millions of daily calls. Returning typed values with confidence scores in a single forward pass is smart engineering, since downstream pipelines need calibrated uncertainty more than fluent prose. In our view this is less a breakthrough than a well-aimed product: it won't trouble frontier labs, but it squeezes startups charging far more for structured extraction APIs. Expect other infrastructure players to bundle similar micro-models as hooks for their platforms.
