Handing a platform NVIDIA reportedly paid around $700M to acquire over to the Apache 2.0 community is less charity than strategy: the more orchestration around Kubernetes gets standardized, the stickier NVIDIA's hardware ecosystem becomes. For smaller labs, though, this is genuinely good news — GPU fractioning and quota management were previously enterprise-priced, and now fractional GPU scheduling ships without vendor lock-in. It also puts real pressure on CNCF alternatives like Volcano and Kueue, which must now compete against a first-party, CUDA-native stack. In our view, the deeper signal is that NVIDIA treats the software layer around compute as the next battleground, not just the silicon. Worth watching whether community momentum survives beyond the initial release.
NVIDIA Open Sources Run:ai Under Apache 2.0 for Kubernetes GPU Orchestration NVIDIA has released the full Run:ai GPU orchestration platform as open source under Apache 2.0. The release includes KAI Scheduler, CUDA 13.4 GPU fractioning, quota management, and a local Kind dev environment. The post NVIDIA Open Sources Run:ai Under Apache 2.0 for Kube…
