Bringing Orchestra Bio's team in-house is a clear signal that OpenAI sees AI-for-science as a core growth axis, not a side experiment. The timing makes sense: with Isomorphic Labs pushing protein design and big pharma building internal AI teams, computational drug discovery is getting crowded, and wet-lab-experienced leadership is exactly what pure AI labs lack. The strategic question he leaves open is whether OpenAI will run its own therapeutic pipeline or remain a toolmaker for pharma — the former is far riskier given decade-long clinical timelines and brutal attrition rates. On our view, the talent grab matters more than any near-term product here. Expect more biotech acqui-hires from frontier labs over the next year.
Excited to welcome Orchestra Bio and @ashokaraj_ to OpenAI as we broaden our work in AI-assisted drug discovery!
